GPA CALCULATOR
HOW TO USE THIS WEIGHTED GPA CALCULATOR
-
Type each class name, then pick your letter grade.
-
Enter the credits for the class. Most full-year high school classes are 1 credit and semester classes are 0.5.
-
Choose the level: Regular, Honors or AP / IB (dual-enrollment classes usually count like AP).
-
Your unweighted GPA, weighted GPA and total credits update as you type. Your classes stay saved in this browser, so you can come back and add next semester.
HOW WEIGHTED GPA WORKS
An unweighted GPA puts every class on the same 4.0 scale: an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, a D is 1.0 and an F is 0. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes. This calculator uses the most common high school system: honors classes add 0.5 and AP, IB or dual-enrollment classes add 1.0. That means an A in an AP class counts as a 5.0 in your weighted GPA.
Each grade is multiplied by its credits, added up, and divided by your total credits. A 1-credit class therefore counts twice as much as a half-credit class.
TIPS FOR RAISING YOUR GPA
-
Focus on the classes with the most credits first; they move your GPA the most.
-
Take a harder class only if you can keep a solid grade in it. A B in AP (4.0 weighted) beats a C in AP (3.0 weighted) and matches an A in a regular class.
-
Check grades every couple of weeks, not just at report card time, so there is still time to fix a slipping grade.
FAQ
What is a good weighted GPA in high school?
It depends on your school and goals, but a weighted GPA above 3.5 is generally considered strong, and selective colleges often see weighted GPAs above 4.0 from students who take many AP or honors classes. Colleges also look at how hard your classes were, not just the number.
Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. Because honors and AP classes add extra points, a weighted GPA on this scale can go up to 5.0. An unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA treats every class the same. Weighted GPA adds points for honors, AP, IB and dual-enrollment classes, so it rewards taking harder courses.
Does this GPA calculator count A+ grades?
By default an A+ counts as 4.0, like most high schools. Some schools count an A+ as 4.3; turn on the A+ option to use that instead.
Is my school's GPA calculated the same way?
Not always. Every school and district has its own rules for weighting, A+ grades and which classes count, so check your school's handbook for its exact method.
